The Construction Education Institute has long set MCA Chicago apart from other associations, making us the leader in education for the entire construction industry.

A joint effort of the MCA and the Piping Education Council, the Institute continues to expand its offerings by including several new classes each year. In addition to recently graduating the Institute’s first Project Management “class,” a significant number of foremen and project managers continue to be involved in two certificate programs. And, after years of planning, the association, together with Local 597, kicked off a new Service Training program for the 2004-2005 year.

Our efforts to expand training opportunities on a regional level have succeeded in developing partnerships that include Rockford, Joliet, and other surrounding communities. Construction Institute classes include:

Introduction to Direct Digital Controls
Primary -Secondary Pumping Made Easy
Project Planning
Controlling Labor Cost
Managing Change Orders
Fundamentals of Documentation
Project Closeout
Claims Avoidance
Managing Your General Contractor
Construction Defect & Mold Liability
Fundamentals for Project Managers
Basic Negotiating Skills
Legal Issues for Project Managers
Job Cost Controls
OSHA 10- & 30-Hour Safety

Included in the Institute are a variety of basic computer skills courses designed for computer users of every level. These classes have become the most popular offerings of the Institute and are appropriate for everyone - from entry level clerks to the CEO.

Training Senior Management through the Executive Forum

As a spin-off of the Construction Institute, MCA initiated the Executive Forum in 2003. Designed as a sort of “Senior Management 101,” this unique and intensive program is aimed at equipping “heir apparents” with the skills and knowledge necessary to survive at the CEO and senior management levels. Targeted workshops cover areas ranging from marketing and construction finance to contract law and human resources. This exciting new program has already become a model for other MCA affiliates across the United States.

Forming Creative Educational Partnerships

As MCA Chicago continually looks for ways to expand out message to youth, creative partnerships with Jerry Katz and the National Foundation for Energy Education provides energy workshops to teachers and students, inspiring young people to become interested in science. It also helps teachers meet state and national science education standards. MCA provides HVAC professionals for classroom presentations relating to internal and thermal energy instruction. By heightening the awareness about energy concepts and HVAC, MCA hopes to ensure ample qualified recruits for the piping industry in the future.

Another creative partnership has teamed MCA Chicago with Illinois State University to establish a first ever student chapter that supports university students studying construction management through scholarships and internships.

Certification through Education

Our commitment to excellence is also reflected in the welder’s certification program, which currently graduates more than four times the number of welders than any other program in the country - over 1000 welders in the past year alone.

MCA’s dedicated support of continuing education continues to pay off as record numbers of service technicians from Local 597 become STAR certified through the UA’s STAR Certification Program.

Monthly & Annual Meetings Increase Opportunities for Learning

In addition to these programs, our monthly Regular Business Meetings offer members the opportunity to learn more about hot topics through our mini-seminars — presented by contractors, for contractors. These meetings also feature presentations by knowledgeable speakers ranging from industry consultants to elected officials, as well as provide contractors a chance to discuss important industry issues with their peers.

The Annual Fall Conference, a valuable four-day event, offers members the opportunity to participate in a variety of forums, learn from industry experts, and spend quality time networking with their peers. The Fall Conference is held is a different destination each year, including Cancun, Cape Cod, St. Thomas, Breakers, and Napa Valley.
