As the voice of the union mechanical contracting industry in Chicago, MCA Chicago keeps labor relations at the top of its list of priorities, working closely with the leadership of the Pipe Fitters Union Local 597 to protect
the interests of the working man while providing contractors with the best trained personnel in the industry. Remarkably, MCA and Local 597 have gone over 100 years without a strike or work stoppage.

Building on an already strong partnership with Local 597, MCA Chicago initiated quarterly dinner meetings between union and association leadership in 2003. This increased opportunity for communication has served to facilitate the development of new and more responsible Hiring Hall Rules, as well as opened the door for management Taft Hartly trustees to have more meaningful input regarding fund activities.

Growing the Pool of Qualified Apprentice Applicants

MCA Chicago has continued to sustain the growth of qualified apprentice applicants - especially minorities - through aggressive marketing campaigns such as “Taking on Tomorrow.” We feel strongly that all races and genders bring value to the UA workforce. We’ve worked hard to recruit minorities through the contacts made by Linda Hannah, out recruitment consultant who specializes in outreach in the African-American community. We’ve also translated our recruitment materials and radio advertising to Spanish to attract Hispanic youth to our apprenticeship program.

We’ve made it a goal to set new standards in labor relations by educating and encouraging all qualified applicants about the value of union membership.
