cover horror stories from several projects in order
to keep others from making similar mistakes on
future projects. It will help project managers and

MCA Construction Education Institute

Christopher A. Philbrick, P.E., LEED

Retro-commissioning is a commissioning process
applied to existing buildings that have never been
commissioned. It is a systematic, documented
process that identifi es low-cost operational and
maintenance improvements in existing buildings
and brings the buildings up to the design intentions
of its current usage. Retro-commissioning assures
that the mechanical systems are optimally integrated
and perform together as effi ciently as possible.
Retro-commissioning primary focus is on using
O&M tune-up activities and diagnostic testing to
optimize the building systems. This course will
outline the process and phases of RCx: planning,
investigation, implementation, measurement and
verifi cation. Chris Philbrick will cover a typical project
that has moved through the retro-commissioning
process and will include a summary of cost and
savings for multiple projects. Typical low cost
measures will be discussed as well as how the retro-
commissioning process relates to LEED
®
EB credits.
