CEI: Intro to Project Management Series Part 1

During this four week (one session per week) series, participants will be introduced to the sample construction project that will be used for the course, learn about the project life cycle and will hear all that is occurring during each phase of that cycle. Using the MCAA’s Successful Project Management Flowchart as a resource, participants will learn about the Project Acquisition process while reviewing documents from the sample project. You will explore the PreConstruction Phase of the project, which is critical to the success of project execution. Students will learn all a Project Coordinator could do to assist the project team in these two phases of the project life cycle.

Session 1 (October 27): In this session, students will be given an overview of the entire course and layout of how the course is structured, along with a discussion of the life cycle of a project.  Students will learn about the project acquisition process by using a sample project RFP and other bid documents such as Addenda, multiple bid forms, and compliance items that must be included with a bid for it to be considered.  Lastly, a discussion of the RFI process and how a PC could assist with the acquisition process.

Session 2 (November 3): This session will start with a review of what was covered last session and continue with a discussion of surety bonding and bonds and a review of the Addenda for the sample project.  Participants will again review the RFP and learn all a PC could do to assist the estimating team. This session will conclude with a discussion of various communication methods and the critical role documentation plays in protecting the company.

Session 3 (November 10): During this session, students will learn what happens after a project is awarded, beginning with Turnover/Kickoff Meetings, what each of these meetings is for and a discussion of specific items that should be covered. The introduction of a simple CPM schedule, submittal process, and special safety requirements are also discussed.  Last will be a discussion about the importance of and potential benefits to planning the work before it starts and continues to plan the work in short intervals after the start of construction.

Day 4 (November 17): Using MCAA’s “Planning for Productivity” format and outline, this session is dedicated to the steps that should be followed to properly evaluate and plan a project.  Included will be an in-depth look at the sample project stipulated contract, the importance of tracking changes to the work, and designing a financial plan for the project.
