Despite COVID, many specialty contractors performed well in 2020, particularly those that serviced essential businesses.
The industry remains fragmented though consolidation is occurring. Deal activity in the space has continued at a healthy clip and business valuations have been strong, with both private equity groups and strategics attracted to the non-discretionary nature of many services specialty contractors offer.
Specialty contractors considering a sale in the coming years should be mindful of organizing their books and records and making sure that their financial statements reflect an alignment between the timing of when work is performed and when revenues and costs are recognized.
